Keeping Your Media Private

Sensitive media can be exposed through device access, cloud backups, or unencrypted messaging. A few simple steps can significantly reduce risk.

    Securing Media on Your Phone

    iPhone

    • • Use the Hidden album in Photos (requires Face ID)
    • • Disable iCloud Photos sync for sensitive content
    • • Use a third-party vault app with its own passcode

    Android

    • • Use Secure Folder (Samsung) or Private Space (Pixel)
    • • Disable Google Photos backup for sensitive folders
    • • Use a third-party vault app with encryption

    End-to-End Encryption

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means only you and the recipient can read messages—not even the platform itself.

"Encrypted in transit" means your message is protected while traveling to the server, but the platform can still read it once it arrives. Only E2EE prevents platform access entirely.

    Cloud Storage Risks

Even if your messages are encrypted, your media may still be exposed through automatic cloud backups. Here's what you need to know.

    iCloud (Apple)

    • • iCloud Photos syncs your entire camera roll to Apple's servers by default
    • • Standard iCloud backups are encrypted, but Apple holds the keys and can access your data
    • • Advanced Data Protection enables end-to-end encryption—Apple cannot access your data
    • • WhatsApp backups to iCloud are separate from WhatsApp's E2EE—enable WhatsApp's encrypted backup feature

Google Drive / Google Photos (Android)

    • • Google Photos backs up your camera roll automatically if enabled
    • • Google Drive backups are encrypted in transit and at rest, but Google can access them
    • • WhatsApp backups to Google Drive can be end-to-end encrypted—enable this in WhatsApp settings
    • • Google does not currently offer a full end-to-end encrypted backup option like Apple's Advanced Data Protection

    Tips to Minimize Cloud Risks

    Disable auto-backup for sensitive folders

Exclude specific albums or folders from syncing to the cloud.

    Enable encrypted backups in apps

WhatsApp and Signal offer optional encrypted cloud backups—turn them on.

    Use Advanced Data Protection (iPhone)

This enables E2EE for most iCloud data including photos and backups.

    Review what's being backed up

Periodically check your cloud storage settings to see what's being synced.

Remember: If your cloud account is compromised (weak password, phishing, or a data breach), anything stored there could be exposed—even if the original app used encryption.
